I have always wanted to be an entrepreneur, however I could not find something that I was passionate about until my mother became ill.
For years my brother, sisters, and I struggled to care for mom as she battled with dementia. The doctors told us that everyone has the gene that is linked to Alzheimer; however, they are not sure why it stays dormant in some and not others. After researching dementia, I found doctors had linked loneliness to dementia. I began reflecting on the times when I returned home and my mother would be sitting alone at the kitchen table looking out the window into the wooded backyards. When it was time for me to leave, she would talk to me all the way to my car clinging to every last bit of conversation. Often she called me and we would talk sometimes for hours. Sometimes I would rush her off the phone because I had what I thought were more important things I needed to do.
Watching my mother go from a vibrant person to someone that talked about kids who were not there, I began to ask myself; "What can I do to help other people who may be lonely or isolated”. Thus, Club 50+ was established on October 23, 2013 and the Silver Chat Line was started a year later.
September 2018, I turned 60 years old. I celebrated this milestone at my mom’s bedside where she laid clinging to life suffering yet another bout of pneumonia from the Alzheimer disease. Four days later, mom was at peace. I really wish the Silver Chat Line was available years earlier to help mom.
There are many more widows, widowers, empty nesters, retirees, caregivers and people from all walks of life finding themselves lonely through circumstance. At the end of the calls you can hear the change in their demeanor. For that time loneliness was put at bay and replaced by a friendly and caring person that took time to reach out to someone in need. Callers feel the warmth and joy of friendship and the pleasurable indulgence of simply chatting about everything and nothing with a new friend.
The Silver Chat Line sponsored by Club 50+ is a valuable FREE service. 100% of your tax deductible gift will go towards the Silver Chat Line. We are all volunteers, there are no paid employees. Our members give of their finances, time and from their hearts.
